Chapter Overview
The Human Respiratory System is responsible for taking oxygen into the body and removing carbon dioxide. Oxygen is needed by cells to release energy from food during cellular respiration. Without oxygen, body cells cannot function properly.
The respiratory system consists of the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and lungs. Air enters through the nose and travels through these organs until it reaches the alveoli where gaseous exchange takes place.
This chapter also explains the mechanism of breathing, including inhalation and exhalation. Students learn how the diaphragm and rib muscles help move air into and out of the lungs. Common respiratory disorders such as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia and tuberculosis are also discussed.
