Chapter Overview

States of matter are the physical forms in which matter exists, such as solid, liquid and gas. These states differ because particles have different arrangements, spaces and kinetic energies. Kinetic particle theory helps explain why solids have fixed shapes, liquids can flow and gases can expand to fill a container.

Phase changes occur when matter changes from one state to another. Melting, boiling, freezing, condensation, sublimation and deposition can be explained by changes in particle motion and internal energy. During a phase change, temperature may remain constant because the supplied or removed energy is used to change the arrangement of particles.

This chapter also explains gas laws and diffusion. Boyle's law, Charles's law and Avogadro's law describe how pressure, volume, temperature and amount of gas are related. Diffusion of gases depends on molecular mass and temperature. These concepts are useful in daily life, industry, medicine, air fresheners, 3D printing and biological systems.
