Chapter Overview
Chapter 1 of Class 12 English, "Journey to Taif", chronicles a decisive and deeply moving episode in the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Following the Year of Sorrow (Am al-Huzn), marked by the deaths of his beloved wife Hazrat Khadijah (RA) and his supportive uncle Abu Talib, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) faced intensified persecution in Makkah. Seeking a receptive audience for divine truth, he journeyed on foot to the neighboring city of Taif accompanied by his companion Hazrat Zayd ibn Harithah (RA).
Upon arriving in Taif, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) approached the chieftains of the Thaqif tribe, inviting them to embrace Islam and justice. However, the tribal leaders rejected his message with arrogance and hostility, inciting hooligans, slaves, and street youth to mock and stone him. As he walked out of the city, he was relentlessly pelted with stones until his shoes were filled with blood, and Hazrat Zayd (RA) was severely wounded while attempting to shield him.
Taking refuge in a quiet orchard outside the city, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) uttered his immortal supplication expressing complete humility, devotion, and submission to the pleasure of Allah. When Angel Jibreel (AS) appeared alongside the Angel of the Mountains, offering to destroy the city between the two surrounding peaks, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) demonstrated the pinnacle of Islamic ethics and values by refusing retribution and praying for the guidance of their future generations. This chapter exemplifies tolerance, spiritual fortitude, and mercy, offering profound ethical guidance for intermediate students.
