Chapter Overview
Biodiversity is the second chapter of Class 9 Biology. It explains the variety of organisms present in different ecosystems and the importance of classifying them. Students learn the aims and principles of classification, and how organisms are grouped into different taxonomic ranks.
This chapter explores the history of classification systems, from Aristotle to the modern Five-Kingdom Classification system. Students learn about the domains of living organisms and specifically the classification of Domain Eukarya. A special focus is also given to the status of viruses, prions, and viroids in classification, as they are on the borderline of living and non-living things.
Another important topic in this chapter is Binomial Nomenclature, the scientific method of naming organisms introduced by Carolus Linnaeus. Students learn the rules of naming and the significance of using scientific names. Finally, the chapter discusses conservation of biodiversity, endangered species in Pakistan, and the impact of human activities on ecosystems.
