On this page, students can read easy notes, download the PDF, revise important concepts and prepare MCQs, short questions and long questions. The content is written for Punjab Board English Medium students according to the PCTB / PECTAA syllabus context.
Chapter Overview
Bioenergetics is the eighth chapter of Class 9 Biology. It deals with the fundamental concept of energy transformation in biological systems. Students begin by learning about oxidation and reduction reactions, the basic mechanisms of energy transfer, and ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate), which acts as the major energy currency of all cells.
A large part of the chapter covers Photosynthesis, the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight to synthesize food from carbon dioxide and water. Students learn about the light reactions (where solar energy is captured) and the dark reactions or Calvin cycle (where carbon dioxide is fixed into glucose), along with the role of chlorophyll and chloroplasts.
The final core topic is Cellular Respiration, the process by which organisms break down glucose to release energy. The chapter distinguishes between aerobic and anaerobic respiration and explores the stages of aerobic respiration: glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain. These metabolic pathways are critical for students to understand life at a cellular level and are highly important for board examinations.
