Chapter Overview
Dynamics is the third chapter of Class 9 Physics. Unlike kinematics, which only describes motion, dynamics investigates the forces that cause objects to move, change velocity, or remain at rest. Students learn about the concept of force, contact and non-contact forces, and the four fundamental forces in nature: gravitational, electromagnetic, strong nuclear, and weak nuclear forces, including the unification of weak nuclear and electromagnetic forces. The use of free-body diagrams to represent forces acting on a body is also introduced.
The chapter extensively details Newton's laws of motion. Newton's First Law (Law of Inertia) explains that bodies resist changes in their state of rest or motion. Newton's Second Law (F = ma) quantifies force and relates it to acceleration, while Newton's Third Law states that forces act in pairs (action and reaction). Students explore the limitations of Newton's laws, the differences between mass and weight (in the context of gravitational fields), and the differences between mechanical and electronic balances.
Another major topic is friction, covering its dissipative nature, sliding and rolling friction, methods to reduce friction, and terminal velocity.
